A geared project vessel is not always necessary simply because the cargo requires lifting.
In some ports, shore cranes can provide a technically and commercially attractive alternative.
The comparison depends on:
- heaviest lift;
- required crane outreach;
- available shore-crane capacity;
- berth arrangement;
- lifting points;
- hook height;
- port costs;
- availability of suitable vessels.
Using shore cranes may allow consideration of vessels without sufficient onboard gear.
That can widen the available tonnage list.
However, it can also introduce additional port costs, crane booking requirements and operational coordination.
For heavy units, tandem lifts or unusual centres of gravity, the lifting plan must still be reviewed carefully.
There is therefore no general rule that vessel gear or shore cranes are always cheaper.
The correct choice depends on the complete voyage economics.
Best Break Bulk compares both technically acceptable vessel options and the handling arrangements available at loading and discharge ports.
